Subject: West Africa VI Ghana 10-12 Sep 2006
On the afternoon of Sunday, 10 September, we left Burkina Faso, flew through Abidjan, Ivory Coast, and arrived in Accra, Ghana in the evening. The hotel where we had reservations had some people that had not checked out and so they had no room for us and we ended up in a different hotel. It was not as nice but the air conditioning worked so at least that was good.
We spent part of Monday and Tuesday with our Compassion Ghana staff. We were pretty tired after traveling and spending a week in Burkina Faso. By Tuesday, when we were in the office, both Payton and I were not feeling real well and we were eating boring food. I had white rice for lunch. Payton had rice and a bit of chicken. Kind of sad to travel all that way and not be able to really get the full food experience. Oh well.
The infrastructure in Accra was quite good but traffic was heavy. One interesting thing is that people walk along the slow-moving traffic selling various things including water, fruit, toilet paper, chocolate, and bread. The cars are moving so slowly and stopping so often that this works out pretty well.
At the airport in Abidjan
Vendors selling stuff to folks in traffic
More people selling stuff (that’s me in the rearview mirror)
Goats on the side of the road.
Here is part of my lunch on Monday at the office. It is eggplant and yams.
This is a fairly typical way of serving coffee. Hot water is provided and these little sleeves of instant coffee. The hotel we stayed at offered a complimentary breakfast like the one below but with an egg if you wished. I was not feeling so well and had dry toast on this day. Yippee .
Canadian flag flying upside down
Women carrying stuff on their heads (which is very common)
